A section of the West Indies Alumina Company (Windalco) red mud lake with bauxite waste overflowing its bank on this property in Kendall, Manchester, yesterday. The huge mud lake, used to store red mud effluent containing caustic soda, covers approximately 90-100 acres and is estimated to contain about 4.5 billion gallons of red mud. Kayon Headley, communications officer at Windalco, said yesterday that the bauxite company has already launched an investigation to determine the cause of the overflow. The company is looking at the possibility of sabotage or heavy rainfall and may also summon the police. |
