A Statement from the Director of ElectionsThere has been some comment in the Jamaican media (talk shows) about the placing of the Voters List on the Internet. The Voters List is 60,000 pages and contains 1,194,205 names. It is divided into the sixty constituencies and the list for each constituency is placed in the main post offices of the constituency to facilitate public access. On the Gleaner's web site you can request a search for a name or a group of names for a stated fee. The opportunity to do this increases public access to what is already a public document. It is a benefit to the public that there are other methods of access other than manually flipping pages to determine if one's name is on the list or a group of names are on the list. The Voters List cannot be downloaded by individuals. Let me emphasize there are no fingerprints on the Voters List; there are no fingerprints on the Internet. There is also other demographic data that is not on the Voters List, for example, parish of birth, mother's maiden name, etc., . We are seeking to make this information more accessible, not less accessible. With the use of the internet a Jamaican temporarily in Japan, New York or any part of the world can check to see if his/her name is on the Voters List. This is something to commend not condemn. D.
